The zoster vaccine, also known as Shingrix, helps prevent shingles, or herpes zoster, which is caused by the varicella zoster virus. The CDC recommends two doses of the vaccine for adults 19 and older, especially those with weakened immune systems. The second dose is given 2–6 months after the first. Shingrix is 97% effective in preventing shingles for adults 50–69 with healthy immune systems, and 91% effective for those 70 and older.
